A 19-year-old woman was arrested after unintentionally shooting her 50-year-old mother in the head using a .40 caliber handgun.
Crystal Lissette Mar was arrested on July 8 and is facing charges of aggravated assault on a family member with a deadly weapon.
Authorities responded to a 911 call in the early hours of July 8, alerting them to a shooting at a home on Hibiscus Lane in Laredo, Texas. The caller, who was the victim, informed emergency services that her daughter had accidentally shot her.
Emergency medical personnel attended to the injured mother, who was conscious and able to talk. She was later transported to Laredo Medical Center for medical attention.
During questioning, the mother explained that her daughter arrived at the house around 3 am and requested to borrow her phone. The daughter revealed she had forgotten her own phone in her friend’s car and needed to contact her. At this time, the mother noticed her daughter carrying what appeared to be a handgun in her purse. Concerned for safety, she insisted that the firearm be removed from the house and the bullets be taken out.
As the daughter attempted to unload the gun, she encountered difficulty removing the magazine. After an attempt, the magazine was detached, but then an accidental discharge occurred. The mother, realizing she had been shot, promptly dialed 911.
After the emergency call, the daughter fled the scene, but law enforcement officers apprehended her some two blocks away. At the time of her arrest, she was still clutching the magazine, and the police recovered a .40 caliber Smith and Wesson handgun.
During the subsequent investigation, the daughter admitted her lack of familiarity with firearms. She said that she had removed the magazine to demonstrate to her mother that the gun was unloaded. However, as she removed the magazine, she inadvertently pressed the trigger, causing the weapon to discharge a single round.
Crystal Lissette Mar is currently being detained at Laredo County Jail on a $30,000 bond.
