In a double murder-suicide in the Inwood community of Winter Haven, Florida, three lives were tragically lost.

Riley John Groover, 26, was identified by the Polk County Sheriff’s Office as the suspect who allegedly killed his partner and then himself. The victims were 21-year-old Camdyn Rider, a transgender man in his eighth month of pregnancy, and his unborn baby.

According to eyewitness accounts, the incident took place on the evening of July 21, outside the home Groover shared with Rider on Central Avenue West. Groover is alleged to have shot Rider multiple times. Despite immediate medical attention, Rider’s unborn child could not be saved.

The suspect’s mother, who also lived in the home, shared that the couple, though engaged, had a rocky relationship often marred by domestic disputes.

Groover’s mother disclosed that her son had used her firearm, kept for home protection, to shoot Rider.

Court documents show a history of violent incidents involving Groover, including past instances of aiming at individuals. He confessed to firing BB pellets through a house’s window and repeated harassment when he was 17. Groover had a prior conviction for battery on a law enforcement officer and was under juvenile conditional release until 2016.

Recent incidents include Groover’s altercations with family members, one incident where he reportedly used a pocket knife to stab a relative. In several cases, charges were dropped due to the victim’s request or Groover’s ongoing treatment for autism in a group home facility.

The investigation into this unfortunate incident is ongoing.
