A disastrous traffic incident occurred on Tuesday, August 22. A bus carrying 52 passengers, including locals and migrants, collided with a trailer truck.
The accident occurred on the Cuacnopalan-Oaxaca highway in central Mexico near the Oaxaca and Puebla state borders.
The unfortunate event resulted in 16 deaths, comprising eight men and eight women, including a minor and a Venezuelan citizen. Another 36 passengers sustained injuries and were immediately transported to hospitals in Puebla for medical attention.
The 52 passengers included 10 passengers from Venezuela who were hoping to gain legal entry to the United States.
Oaxaca’s Prosecutor’s Office confirmed the incident and announced an ongoing investigation into the cause of the crash.
Governor Salomón Jara Cruz of Oaxaca offered condolences and support through a Twitter post.
Puebla’s interior ministry is liaising with federal and state authorities to ensure victims receive the needed assistance.
