A passenger train derailed on Sunday, August 6, resulting in at least 30 deaths, leaving another 90 passengers injured.
The Hazara Express train in southern Pakistan was on its way from Karachi to Rawalpindi when ten of its cars derailed near the Sarhari railway station in Nawabshah, according to senior railway officer Mahmoodur Rehman Lakho.
Amongst the victims were women and children, as reported by senior police officer Abid Baloch. Rescue teams worked to retrieve trapped passengers from the wrecked train cars. Operations were completed by Sunday evening, and injured passengers were rushed to the nearby Peoples Hospital in Nawabshah for medical treatment.
Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif expressed his condolences and prayers for the victims during a political gathering in Punjab. He hoped for a quick recovery for the injured and wished those who lost their lives to find peace.
Train traffic along the main railway line was suspended to facilitate the dispatch of repair trains to the accident site. Minister for Railways Khwaja Saad Rafiq speculated that the derailment could be attributed to a mechanical fault or potential sabotage. An investigation into the incident is underway to determine the exact cause.
This incident occurred merely two months after another train accident involving the Millat Express train, which derailed and was subsequently hit by a Sir Syed Express train near Daharki, resulting in the deaths of at least 40 people and injuring around 100 others.
The train system in Pakistan has been facing challenges due to poor maintenance and outdated communications and signal systems, making train crashes a recurring concern.
