Three men died while another was hospitalized after being shot at a basketball court in Philadelphia.
The incident occurred around 6 pm on Friday, Aug. 11, at the 8th and Diamond courts in North Philadelphia.
Philadelphia Police Department confirmed that a group of five males discharged firearms from a car at a gathering on the court in a playground before escaping.
Deputy Commissioner James Kelly of the Philadelphia Police noted the presence of children nearby, who fortunately remained unharmed. Several bullets struck neighboring residences.
Isiah Williams, 21, succumbed to his injuries at Temple University Hospital on Saturday evening. Another victim, aged 23, is in critical condition after sustaining two shots to the stomach. Nyreese Moore, 22, and Naasir Folk, 24, were pronounced dead at the scene.
Around 50 expended shell casings from three different-caliber firearms were collected by the police at the site. Despite the physical evidence, no arrests have been executed, and the investigators have yet to establish the underlying motive behind the attack. Deputy Commissioner Kelly suggested the gunmen deliberately singled out the victims, pointing towards a specific motive.
Mayor Jim Kenney conveyed his sentiments about the incident, extending condolences to the victims’ families and loved ones.
The city has taken proactive measures to combat gun violence, including providing a $10,000 reward for information leading to the identification, arrest, and conviction of individuals discharging firearms near educational and recreational establishments.
The city also bolstered security by installing over 100 new surveillance cameras around recreation centers. The investigation into the shooting remains active and is being pursued by the Homicide Unit.
