In a tragic incident in Chicago’s Portage Park, a nine-year-old girl lost her life in a shooting. The city reported 27 shootings over the weekend.
Serabi Medina was playing on her scooter outside her home at approximately 9:40 pm when she was approached and shot in the head by 43-year-old Michael Goodman, a neighbor from across the street.
Earlier that day, Goodman had spoken to Serabi and her father about noise. He had previously raised concerns about the noise levels from children playing outdoors in the neighborhood and would come out of his house yelling at them. Neighbors said they tried to avoid him
Following the shooting, a fight broke out between Goodman and Serabi’s father, resulting in Goodman sustaining a gunshot wound over his eye. The police subsequently apprehended Goodman and recovered the weapon used.
Serabi was taken to Stroger Hospital where she was pronounced dead. Goodman was treated for his injuries at Illinois Masonic Medical Center and later charged with first-degree murder.
The Medina family had already faced a tragic loss when Serabi’s mother was killed in a shooting two years ago. Serabi was known in her community for her love of riding her scooter.
