shooting at a block party in Muncie, Indiana early Sunday, July 30, resulted in one person dead and at least 17 others injured.

The event was reported around 1:14 am in the vicinity of S. Hackley St. and E. Willard St., where a large block party was taking place.

On Friday, August 4, John L. Vance Jr., 36, from Yorktown was formally charged with two counts of aggravated battery and criminal recklessness in connection with the shooting.

The prosecutor’s office noted that Vance was not charged with the killing of 30-year-old Joseph Bonner, of Muncie at the incident and an investigation is underway. Court documents say that two of the victims of the shooting told police they saw Vance arguing with Bonner, who died at the scene. One victim said he saw Vance pull out a handgun and shots were heard. Vance was identified in photos shown to the witnesses by detectives.

Dispatchers received multiple calls about the shooting, triggering a response from emergency services. Due to the number of victims and the severity of the situation, several agencies were called in to assist, including police officers from the nearby Eaton Police Department.

Indiana University Health Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie reported that 17 gunshot victims were initially treated in their emergency department. As of Sunday morning, over a dozen of them remained in the hospital in stable condition. Several critically injured victims were airlifted to other medical facilities.
