A three-year-old boy died on Sunday, August 13, at Echo State Park, Utah, after falling from a boat and being struck by its propeller.
Utah State Parks officials confirmed the incident in a press release.
The victim, identified as Walter Greer from Salt Lake City, was enjoying a boat ride on the reservoir with family members when he fell overboard and was hit by the propeller at the rear of the boat.
Park law enforcement rangers responded to the accident, which occurred at the reservoir just before 4:45 pm, according to the release. The child was recovered from the water, and officials confirmed he was wearing a lifejacket at the time. Despite this precaution, rangers pronounced him dead at the scene.
The circumstances leading to the child’s fall remain unclear.
“The Utah Division of State Parks extends our condolences to the family and to all those grieving during this difficult time,” officials said in a statement.
As the investigation continues, authorities urge all boaters to exercise extra caution, especially when young children are onboard.
