A 13-month-old toddler tragically lost her life on Friday, July 28, after she fell from the deck of a catamaran boat while her parents were preparing dinner in the galley below.
As per the Fiji police, the young girl, Māhina Toki, had been secured in a harness on the deck of the Kalamari, engaged in watching a movie, when the incident took place at Musket Cove in western Fiji.
The parents, Mark and Kiri Toki from New Zealand, discovered their daughter’s body floating in the water and hurried to the shore in an attempt to resuscitate her. Other nearby sailors, including medical professionals, reportedly tried to assist but the toddler could not be revived.
A crowdfunding page was initiated by Grace Palos, detailing that Māhina had been tethered to the boat and was watching a movie before she “managed to free herself and found the water.”
Māhina Toki was characterized as a joyful child who took pleasure in the water and boat life. Her parents intend to return to their residence in Great Barrier Island, New Zealand. Funds of over $18,000 from the crowdfunding will go to flights for the parents and a funeral for Māhina.
Fiji authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the toddler’s death.
The New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade is offering consular support to the family.
