A toddler died in Smithtown, Long Island, New York, after being left in the back seat of a car for eight hours.
According to Suffolk County police, the child’s grandmother forgot to drop off the 14-month-old girl at a daycare center on Redwood Lane on her way to work.
After approximately eight hours, the grandmother, 54, went to her jeep to pick up the toddler at the daycare center and made the distressing discovery that the child had been left in the vehicle.
The young girl, later identified as Chyasia Evans, was taken to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
During a vigil held at the parking spot where the incident occurred, Chyasia’s mother, Jessica Watkins, distraught said, “I know you’re going to be my guardian angel. I’ll love you until we meet again, my baby.”
Chyasia’s aunt told reporters that the child’s temperature had risen to 106 degrees by the time she was found in the car. The daycare center had not notified the family that the child was not dropped off.
The high temperature in Smithtown on Monday was 83 degrees.
Detectives from the Suffolk County Police Homicide Squad are currently investigating the case. No charges have been filed at this time in connection with the child’s death.
Approximately 40 children die of heatstroke in the US each year in a vehicle, according to the US Department of Transportation. The majority of cases involve a parent or caregiver who forgets that the child is in the car.
