An alarming confrontation took place in Salem, Indiana, on the evening of August 7.
Around 6:30 pm, a man unexpectedly entered a local residence’s outdoor area, and confronted the male property owner.
The situation escalated as Michael Chastain, aged 45, forced the homeowner to the ground and threatened him with a firearm.
Watching from the house, the man’s spouse noticed the unfolding crisis, and responded by arming herself, and shot Chastain.
Indiana State Police’s Sergeant John Davis commented on the matter, saying, “The wife, seeing her husband endangered by Chastain’s firearm, acted in defense, shooting the intruder.”
Medical responders transported Chastain to a hospital, where he passed away due to his injuries.
Records suggest Chastain formerly had a relationship with the couple’s daughter, who was not on the property during the incident.
Inquiries are ongoing to establish Chastain’s intent, especially given his documented criminal background. According to WLKY, the homeowner involved in the shooting has not been charged.
