In Goulds, Miami-Dade County, Florida, a three-year-old girl accidentally discharged a handgun while her relative was engrossed in a televised football game.
The incident occurred on a Saturday, September 23 when the toddler, identified as Serenity, found and picked up the handgun moments after her relative, Orlando Young, 23, rose from the couch in excitement over a touchdown.
In-home surveillance video shared on social media revealed the series of events leading up to the accident. Immediately after Serenity picked up the weapon, a gunshot is heard, and the child is seen to be injured.
Serenity’s grandmother, Robin Fuller, who wasn’t present, stated, “It appears she was about to pick up the gun when it discharged, and the bullet struck her finger.”
Following the incident, Fuller was called and she immediately contacted the police.
According to Fuller, the child was expected to be under the supervision of her other grandmother, who was not present in the video footage during the incident.
Orlando Young informed the police that he had prepared breakfast for Serenity and was watching over her. He acknowledged to the police that he had left his gun on the couch, when he was distracted by the football game. Upon realizing what had transpired, he noticed blood on Serenity’s hand.
Serenity was initially taken to Homestead Hospital but was later moved to Nicklaus Children’s Hospital. She underwent a procedure at the hospital and was later released in stable condition. Fuller said the doctors were trying to save the finger and she was praying for her granddaughter’s recovery.
For his role in the incident, Young was taken into custody on charges of child neglect resulting in bodily harm. Young had a fight with another inmate while in detention, leading to additional charges.
