Sigmund Ropich, a 19-year-old U.S. citizen, has been identified as the passenger who went overboard during a cruise aboard the Wonder of the Seas, operated by Royal Caribbean. The cruise had embarked on a seven-day Caribbean journey from Port Canaveral, Florida on August 27, heading to the coast of Cuba.
Upon learning about the incident on August 29, the crew, along with U.S. officials, promptly commenced search operations. Assistance also came from local authorities, a representative from Royal Caribbean confirmed. The young man was not found.
Witnesses and fellow travelers shared glimpses of the ongoing search through videos on TikTok, showcasing a nearby rescue boat. The ship’s PA system further updated passengers about the situation, and a course redirection was made to the last spot where Sigmund was seen.
Communication from Sigmund’s sister, Savannah, highlighted the collaboration between the U.S. and Cuban Embassies in aiding the situation.
Sigmund was notably an accomplished college student, and his family cherished him as the ‘Cool, Calm, and Collected’ one.
The incident is under Coast Guard investigation.
