A 14-year-old boy from Riverview, Florida, was arrested on Saturday, September 16, following a shooting incident that resulted in the death of his mother and severe injuries to his mother’s boyfriend, as per the report from the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.
At approximately 4 pm, the authorities were called to the Summerfield subdivision after receiving multiple 911 calls about the incident. This was relayed by Sheriff Chad Chronister during a press conference.
Upon reaching the scene, deputies confronted the teenager who was reported to have pointed a gun towards himself several times. The situation was defused following a 16-minute negotiation, with deputies deploying a non-lethal projectile to disarm the young man. He was subsequently detained without any more complications.
Shortly after the arrest, deputies received another call concerning a man with multiple gunshot wounds. The injured individual was later recognized as the boyfriend of the suspect’s mother. He had sustained gunshot injuries in the lower torso, hands, and face and was transported to Tampa General Hospital, where his condition is described as critical. The mother was found in the driveway of a home a few blocks away, with gunshot wounds.
In the course of the investigation, it was discovered that the teenager’s older brother was at the residence during the time of the event. He recounted to the deputies that prior to the gunfire, he had heard an argument between their mother and her partner. Following the sound of gunshots, the older sibling came out of his room and saw the younger brother shooting their mother. There was also an attempt by the suspect to aim the firearm at the older sibling, which caused him to leave the premises immediately.
Sheriff Chronister has inferred from the details provided that the 14-year-old might have initially targeted his mother’s boyfriend before shooting his mother. It was also mentioned that the suspect had not been involved in any prior criminal activities.
As the investigation continues, the sheriff’s office is in the process of obtaining a search warrant.
