Mackenzie Shirilla, a 19-year-old from Strongsville, Ohio, received a guilty verdict on all 12 charges, inclusive of murder.
The incident unfolded in the early hours of July 31, 2022, when Shirilla purposefully crashed her car at a speed of 100 mph into a brick building.
This resulted in the deaths of Dominic Russo, 20, her boyfriend, and Davion Flanagan, 19.
Shirilla was found unconscious but later fully recovered.
On August 14, the Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court, presided over by Judge Nancy Margaret Russo, ruled the incident as murder rather than an accident.
Video footage captured the vehicle’s abrupt acceleration and its intentional collision course into the building.
Arguments from the prosecution highlighted Shirilla’s potential motive to terminate a rocky relationship with Russo after allegedly consuming marijuana with the deceased.
The visual evidence, as emphasized by Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Michael O’Malley, revealed undeniable intent. The defense posed questions regarding the true motive behind the act.
Shirilla was handed a life sentence, with potential parole after a 15-year period.
The tragedy has deeply impacted two families, leading to the creation of GoFundMe pages in honor of the victims.
