Oprah And “The Rock” Criticized Despite Support for Maui Victims

Last month, Oprah Winfrey and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson launched the People’s Fund of Maui, a fundraising effort for the Maui wildfire victims. Their goal was to offer financial aid to those most affected. They started with a joint donation of $10 million, while also urging the public to donate.

However, some criticized the campaign. The main contention arose from the public appeal for funds, given the vast personal wealth of both celebrities. Forbes estimates place Winfrey’s net worth at $2.5 billion and Johnson’s at $270 million. This joint donation represents a fraction of their collective net worth.

Winfrey addressed the critiques on September 13, 2023. She was particularly concerned about a TikTok video that falsely suggested she had a role in the Maui fires. There is no evidence or credible source supporting such an allegation.

In August, Maui experienced devastating wildfires that resulted in the loss of 115 lives and significant property damage. According to a statement from the County of Maui on September 12, the Lahaina fire is now fully contained. The fires in Olinda and Kula are close to complete containment as well, with levels at 90% and 95%.

Apart from Winfrey, other celebrities like Stevie Nicks, formerly of Fleetwood Mac, also faced criticism related to the Maui fires. The specific reasons for this backlash are diverse but appear to be linked to their public comments or actions surrounding the fires.

While Winfrey faced criticism, her efforts to assist the Maui community are undeniable. Her reaction to the backlash suggests her genuine desire to help. As a well-known personality, Winfrey has always been associated with numerous charitable endeavors, including the Maui relief initiative.
