Hiram Georgia Police announced an incident of gunfire at the Walmart Super Center on Jimmy Lee Smith Parkway at about 7:30 pm on Wednesday, September 20.
Based on information from Police Chief Mike Turner, the incident was a murder-suicide involving a young male and a young female who previously had a relationship.
Chief Turner went on to specify that the two individuals were acquainted, and he emphasized that this was not a case of an active shooter targeting random people.
Upon arriving at the scene, officers found both parties with gunshot injuries. They were immediately transported to WellStar Kennestone Hospital. Both were pronounced dead upon arrival.
Witnesses at the Walmart recounted their alarm as they heard gunshots, causing them to flee the store immediately.
Reacting to this event, spokespersons for Walmart conveyed their profound sorrow and ensured full support with the ongoing investigation. As a result of this event, the store will remain shut for some time for the investigation.
Several similar incidents have taken place at different Walmarts in the recent past. This includes a mass shooting event in Chesapeake, Virginia, in 2022 where seven lives were lost. The recent Hiram event is only about 15 miles from another shooting in December that occurred near a Walmart in Marietta, Georgia.
