Former American swimming star Jamie Cail, 42, was found dead earlier this year at her home in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
On the evening of February 21, Cail’s boyfriend returned home shortly after midnight to find Cail unresponsive. He and a friend took her to the Myrah Keating Smith Community Health Center, where she was declared dead.
An autopsy recently revealed that the cause of death was an accidental drug overdose, according to the U.S. Virgin Islands Police Department.
The toxicology report indicates that Cail’s death resulted from “fentanyl intoxication with aspiration of gastric content.”
Authorities confirmed the manner of her death was accidental, based on an August 22 report from the medical examiner’s office.
Specifics on how Cail came into contact with fentanyl, a powerful synthetic opioid, have not been shared by the police.
Originally from New Hampshire, Jamie Cail showcased her talent on numerous national and international platforms. A notable moment from her career was her performance at the Phillips 66 National Championship held at the Centennial Sportsplex in Nashville, Tenn.
Cail won a gold medal with a relay team at the 1997 Pan Pacific Championships, as reported by SwimSwam.com. Additionally, as confirmed by the school’s Alumni Association, she was a member of the women’s swim team at the University of Maine during the 2000-2001 academic year.
