An 18-month-old girl died from a gunshot wound to the head on Sunday night, September 3, in Palm Coast, Florida.
The incident occurred at a home on Ranwood Lane near Randolph Drive. The Flagler Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call around 11:45 pm following a shooting incident.
On arrival, officers discovered the baby girl with a head injury. The weapon involved was identified as an American tactical multiple-caliber assault pistol. The child was taken to a nearby hospital but was later pronounced dead.
Sheriff Rick Staly, in a news conference on Monday, September 4, named 21-year-old C.J. Nelson Jr. as a person of interest. Nelson was arrested due to a probation violation.
Previously, he was on probation for a gun-related crime and was prohibited from possessing firearms. However, Sheriff Staly did not confirm if the weapon used in the incident belonged to Nelson.
At the time of the incident, eight people, including the child’s mother, were present in the house.
According to Staly, none have provided information to assist the ongoing investigation.
The detectives are currently trying to determine the circumstances of the shooting and if it was accidental.
The Flagler Sheriff’s Office is cooperating with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the State Attorney’s Office in the investigation.
