A collision between a school bus and a tow truck on Route 115 in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania on Wednesday, September 6 led to the hospitalization of 49 children and two adults.
The incident, which occurred at about 8:10 am, involved a school bus carrying 54 students, from kindergarten to eighth grade, to Bear Creek Community Charter School located in Wilkes-Barre. The Pennsylvania State Police confirmed the details during a press conference.
Bear Creek Community Charter School’s CEO, Jim Smith, gave an update in the afternoon. He stated that four children were still under medical care due to moderate injuries. Both the bus driver, Suzanne Ent, 53, and the tow truck operator, Edward Steinmann, 28, were among the hospitalized, both suffering from moderate injuries.
According to State police Captain Patrick Dougherty, preliminary investigations suggest the tow truck driver might have had a medical episode. This might have caused him to unexpectedly swerve into the bus. Photographs from the accident location showed that the front ends of both vehicles sustained significant damage.
After the collision, medical teams attended to the students at the scene. While most were handed over to their guardians post-treatment, a few were sent to Geisinger Wyoming Valley Hospital.
