Former President Donald Trump recently participated in an interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” during which host Kristen Welker questioned him about his actions during the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021. Welker’s inquiries aimed to gain insights into Trump’s actions immediately following his speech at the “Stop the Steal” rally and during the onset of the attack on the Capitol.
When asked about his whereabouts and actions as the attack unfolded, Trump chose not to provide specific details. Welker pressed further, inquiring about his activities when the Capitol was under siege. In response, Trump referred to statements he had made from the Oval Office on that fateful day, as well as a video message he released later.
In the video message, Trump urged individuals to vacate the Capitol premises and to show respect for law enforcement. While addressing the situation, he reiterated his belief that the 2020 election results were fraudulent and should not be validated. He stated, “This was a fraudulent election, but we can’t play into the hands of these people.”
Welker also questioned the timing of the video message, which was released several hours after the attack had begun. She inquired, “That was four o’clock in the afternoon, three hours after the attack started. I want to know who you called on that day.”
Trump’s response did not directly address the question, as he shifted the conversation towards then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. He insinuated that Pelosi held responsibility for the security of the Capitol, stating, “Frankly, just so you understand, I assumed that she took care of it.”
During the interview, Trump declined to provide further details, asserting, “I’m not going to tell you anything. I behaved so well. I did such a good job.”
This statement has been met with criticism from various quarters, including Republican Chris Christie, who has argued that Trump should have reacted more promptly and decisively to the Capitol riot.
