On Monday, October 2, 2023 an accident involving two supercars and a camper van occurred on State Road 195 in South Sardinia, Italy, resulting in the death of two people.
A video taken by a driver on the same road captured the supercars, a Lamborghini and a Ferrari, overtaking his vehicle. Not long after he was passed, the video showed a white camper van being overtaken as well. As the video continued, the red Ferrari sped up and approached the blue Lamborghini just as both were attempting to pass the camper.
The two supercars collided, leading the Lamborghini to strike the rear of the camper van. The impact caused the rear of the camper to lift off the ground, leaving it momentarily balanced on the front tire. The van landed perpendicular to the road and flipped onto its side.
Behind the overturned camper, the Ferrari also flipped and caught fire.
The police identified the two occupants of the Ferrari as Swiss tourists Melissa, 63, and Markus Krautli, 67. Both lost their lives in the accident.
The camper’s occupants, Lorenzo Mascarin, 62, and his wife, experienced only minor injuries. Mascarin recounted the sudden and unexpected nature of the accident in a statement. He described his surprise at finding themselves in the overturned camper and mentioned the sight of the burning Ferrari when they exited their vehicle.
The two occupants of the Lamborghini managed to escape the crash without any injuries. They were later identified as Gayatri Joshi, an Indian Bollywood actress who was seen in “Swades,” and her husband, billionaire Vikas Oberoi. Prosecutors in Italy have opened an investigation into what they are calling a ‘double road homicide,’ and Oberoi could face up to seven years in jail if charged and found guilty.
The vehicles were part of the Sardinia Supercar Tour, an event where people can rent luxury cars and explore the island. The investigation into the details and cause of the crash is ongoing.
