On Sunday, October 29, new homeowners in Headland, Alabama stumbled upon the badly decomposed remains of a 19-year-old while cleaning out an overturned freezer left in their backyard.
Authorities were immediately alerted to the presence of the body of Logan Michael Halstead, which led to the arrest of the teenager’s parents, Michael Shane Halstead, 44, and Karen Tysinger Halstead, 43.
The Halsteads, prior to vacating the property, had been tenants of the house. They had relocated over a month before the property’s acquisition by the new owners.
Law enforcement revealed that the couple had exited the property after failing to keep up with rent payments. The freezer, in which the body was found, was previously left untouched due to its significant weight.
Upon opening the freezer, the new homeowners, Lane Keith and his wife, were confronted with the sight of a human hand, which prompted them to immediately contact the police.
Sheriff Eric Blankenship, in a press briefing, indicated that the time of Logan’s death might have been as early as July or August. Detailed inspection revealed that the teenager’s body had been wrapped in tarps and blankets before being placed in a cardboard box in the freezer.
Logan Michael Halstead’s life had been fraught with medical challenges, including spina bifida, a condition affecting the spinal cord. Despite these hardships, the circumstances of his death remain enigmatic. Michael Shane Halstead, when questioned by Sheriff Blankenship, said that he experienced a manic episode and couldn’t recall how his son’s body ended up in the freezer. In an attempt to distance his wife from the incident, Michael stressed that his wife played no part in the placement of the body. The Halsteads have two other children, twins, who are now with child protective services.
On Wednesday, October 11, Michael had allegedly informed a different police department about the abandoned remains of his son earlier in the month. This confession, however, did not lead to the discovery of Logan’s body as officers, upon inspecting the property, failed to locate the remains.
The charge of ‘abuse of a corpse’ has been levied against both parents. This charge, as defined by Alabama state law, pertains to the unauthorized removal, mistreatment, or concealment of human remains. As the case unfolds, local residents, friends and family watch closely, awaiting more details about the events leading up to this somber discovery in Headland, Alabama.
