The college football game between Northwestern State and Nicholls State, set for last weekend, was abruptly canceled following the fatal shooting of a Northwestern State player in Natchitoches, Louisiana.
Ronnie Caldwell, a 21-year-old defensive back for Northwestern State, met his tragic end in the early hours of Thursday morning, October 12, 2023. The incident took place at his apartment complex in Natchitoches. Responding to reports of gunshots, a police officer found Caldwell. His death was later confirmed by local news sources.
Northwestern State’s head coach, Brad Laird, released a statement sharing his sorrow. In the statement, Laird emphasized Caldwell’s influential role, stating, “Ronnie Caldwell was a young man who had a promising future. He was our voice in the locker room. When Ronnie spoke, others listened.”
Ronnie Caldwell transferred from Tyler Junior College in 2022. Since then, he took part in 11 games for Northwestern State, initiating in 10 of them. Although an injury prevented him from playing this season, Caldwell still played a pivotal role as a coach.
Nicholls State President Marcus D. Jones, in light of the tragedy, announced the discontinuation of the Family Day festivities that were to align with the football game.
Officials are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding Caldwell’s death.
