On the early morning of October 8, 2023 in north Phoenix, 19-year-old Daniel Windus shot his 54-year-old father inside their home. Windus then used the firearm on himself near a parked vehicle outside their property.
A 911 call alerted authorities to the incident Sunday morning. The call came from a distressed woman, later identified as Mrs. Windus, wife of the deceased Preston Windus.
In the call, Mrs. Windus relayed to 911 operators that her spouse had been shot in their home and she suspected their son, Daniel, was responsible. When police reached the scene, they discovered Daniel in a car in the driveway. Mrs. Windus verified to the officers that her spouse was inside the house, unresponsive after the gunshot.
The Phoenix Police Department faced further complications upon reaching the scene. Mrs. Windus mentioned “possible hazards” within the residence during her 911 call. This led the officers to proceed with added prudence. Given the potential risks, a bomb squad was called to the location. Neighboring residences were evacuated for safety reasons. However, upon inspection, the bomb squad did not locate any dangerous materials or devices.
As the inquiry continues, officials are encouraging anyone with pertinent details to step forward. Such information might be crucial to understanding the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
