On Sunday morning, October 15, 2023, an incident occurred on the College Station campus of Texas A&M University. A freshman student, Britney Romero, lost her life after she fell from a balcony on the third floor of Dunn Hall.
Romero was a student focused on completing a major in health, with plans to graduate by 2027. The circumstances surrounding her presence on the balcony at the time of the fall are yet to be clarified. There is also no confirmation on whether the fall was witnessed by anyone.
Mexican Student Association president Fabian Gonzalez said that friends of Romero believe it would have been out of character for her to jump from the balcony willingly.
The Texas A&M University Police Department took immediate action upon locating Romero’s body in the Dunn Hall courtyard. They have since initiated an in-depth investigation into the incident. An autopsy is set to be conducted to ascertain the specific cause behind Romero’s death.
Joe Ramirez, the Vice President for Student Affairs at the university, addressed the students about the incident. He communicated the university’s unwavering commitment to student safety. He also mentioned that a comprehensive review of this incident will be undertaken to understand and implement necessary precautions in the future.
Students facing any challenges have been reminded by Ramirez to seek guidance and assistance from the university’s dedicated counselors and caseworkers. As the investigation progresses, Texas A&M University is actively collaborating with authorities, ensuring clarity and providing support to the deceased student’s family and friends.
A vigil was held at the university on Thursday, October 19, in honor of Romero.
