A 41-year-old registered nurse from Pennsylvania has been indicted on multiple counts of murder and attempted murder for allegedly administering fatal doses of insulin to patients across several healthcare facilities. The investigation has been unraveling further victims over the span of three years.
Heather Pressdee was initially charged in May with the murder of two nursing home residents and the injury of a third. However, recent court developments have dramatically widened the scope of the case. Pressdee is now facing two new counts of first-degree murder, 17 counts of attempted murder, and 19 counts of neglect of care-dependent individuals.
The probe into Pressdee’s practices indicates that she administered insulin inappropriately to 19 patients at five healthcare facilities starting in 2020, with diabetic and non-diabetic patients alike suffering dire results.
Primarily working night shifts, Pressdee, who was employed by several healthcare centers, is alleged to have committed these acts during these hours.
Having waived her right to a preliminary hearing, Pressdee remains in custody at the Butler County jail. Should she be convicted of first-degree murder, the potential consequence under Pennsylvania law could be the death penalty.
The case of 68-year-old Marianne Bower, who passed away in September 2021 while in Pressdee’s care at a rehabilitation center, is one of the deaths under scrutiny. Bower’s relatives originally thought her death was from natural causes, a view that changed upon learning of Pressdee’s alleged role.
Authorities and healthcare facility officials have withheld specific timelines and the identities of all the implicated facilities as the investigation proceeds.
The severity of the accusations, considering the death toll and the duration over which the incidents took place, has attracted considerable public interest. There’s an anticipation that the Pennsylvania Board of Nursing will conduct an inquiry into Pressdee’s professional conduct, her nursing license having been already suspended.
Court records have shown that Pressdee texted her mother between April 2022 and May 2023, expressing dissatisfaction with her job, patients, and colleagues, even discussing causing them harm.
As the judicial process unfolds, it is expected that further particulars will become known, shedding light on the path leading to the grave charges laid against Pressdee. The affected community and the victims’ families are watching closely, seeking closure and justice.
