Guillermo “Willie” Hernández, a prominent figure in Major League Baseball and a key player for the Detroit Tigers, passed away on November 21, 2023, at the age of 69 at his residence in Sebring, Florida.
Hernández, who had a history of heart issues and received a pacemaker in 2009, is remembered for his contributions to baseball, including his induction into the Puerto Rican Sports Hall of Fame.
Born on November 14, 1954, in Aguada, Puerto Rico, Hernández’s career in MLB began with his signing by the Philadelphia Phillies as an amateur free agent in 1973. He debuted in the major leagues with the Chicago Cubs in 1977, embarking on a 13-year career that included significant contributions to the Cubs, Phillies, and Tigers.
The 1984 season saw Hernández achieve extraordinary success with the Detroit Tigers. He was awarded the American League Cy Young and Most Valuable Player Awards, making him one of the rare players to earn both honors in the same season. His performance that year included a 1.92 ERA, 32 saves in 80 games, and closing 68 games. Hernández played a vital role in the postseason, especially in the World Series, where he made three appearances and secured two saves, including in the decisive Game 5 of the championship.
Before joining the Tigers, Hernández had stints with the Cubs from 1977 to 1983 and briefly with the Phillies in 1983. His transfer to the Tigers in March 1984 marked a significant phase in his career. During his time with the Tigers from 1984 to 1989, he was selected for three All-Star games and maintained a 2.60 ERA across 218 games.
Hernández’s overall career statistics are notable, with a 3.38 ERA, 147 saves, and 788 strikeouts in 744 games, totaling 1,044⅔ innings. His postseason achievements were equally impressive, with a 1.32 ERA and three saves in 10 games.
The baseball community has expressed deep sorrow over Hernández’s passing, with tributes and memories shared by former teammates and fans. Alan Trammell, a Hall of Famer and ex-teammate with the Tigers, recalled Hernández as a significant contributor to their 1984 World Series win and an excellent teammate.
Plans are underway for Hernández’s funeral services, which will be held in Aguada, Puerto Rico.
