On Sunday, October 29, in Kalamassery, Kerala state, southern India, an explosion at the Zamra International Convention Center interrupted a prayer gathering of hundreds of Jehovah’s Witnesses. This tragic event resulted in the death of three attendees and injuries to 50 others.
Immediately after the explosion, a woman was pronounced dead. Another woman succumbed to her injuries hours later, and a young girl, aged 12, died due to severe burn injuries.
The incident quickly caught the attention of local authorities. Sheik Darvesh Saheb, the chief police officer of Kerala state, stated that early investigations point to the use of an improvised explosive device as the cause of the explosion.
In a significant development, the police detained Dominic Martin, who was previously associated with the Jehovah’s Witnesses. Before his detention, Martin uploaded a video on Facebook, openly claiming responsibility for the tragic event. This video has become a focal point of the investigation.
In his message, Martin expressed his disagreements with the teachings of Jehovah’s Witnesses. He particularly pointed out their belief that only Jehovah’s Witnesses would be spared in a global catastrophe. Martin pondered on how society should deal with those who harbor wishes for global destruction. He admitted his internal conflict regarding this belief and stated that such ideologies could pose a threat to the country.
While Martin’s video confession has given investigators a lead, they are still in the process of verifying the claims he made.
This unfortunate event in Kerala has not only raised concerns locally but has also resonated on an international scale. Jehovah’s Witnesses, although categorized as Christians, follow distinct beliefs and practices, with door-to-door evangelism being one of their most recognized activities.
The importance of implementing robust security measures at religious sites and large gatherings has been highlighted once again, especially in light of such distressing incidents.
