In Boca Raton, Florida, a former lawyer, Brandon Labiner, implicated in the murder of his father, took his own life while in jail awaiting trial.
Labiner’s death was confirmed by the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday, November 15, 2023. He had been indicted on October 5, 2023, for killing his father, Paul Labiner, in a case that had garnered significant attention. Brandon, 34, was slated to appear in court again on November 28.
The background of the case reveals that earlier in the year, Brandon was accused of stealing nearly $450,000 from a family trust. This led to a severe legal confrontation with his father, resulting in the suspension of Brandon’s law license by the Florida Supreme Court in April, after his father filed both a lawsuit and a bar complaint against him.
The escalating legal battle saw Paul Labiner accuse his son of filing a fraudulent document to dismiss the lawsuit while impersonating the plaintiffs.
The murder took place on July 1, 2023. Surveillance footage outside Paul Labiner’s law office captured Brandon Labiner arriving by bicycle, retrieving a box from a bag, and extracting what appeared to be a firearm. He shot his father multiple times, leaving him dead outside his law office.
At his arrest, Brandon Labiner was already facing personal issues, including the recent death of his unborn child and a divorce. The arrest affidavit cited these personal tragedies, along with the contentious relationship with his father and the ongoing legal dispute, as potential motives for the murder.
If found guilty, Brandon Labiner would have faced either life imprisonment without the chance of parole or the death penalty. He also faced charges for tampering and fabricating physical evidence, a third-degree felony, with a potential sentence of up to five years and a $5,000 fine.
Valentin Rodriguez, Labiner’s public defender, lamented the death of his client, reflecting on the string of tragedies that have afflicted the Labiner family.
