On Thursday, November 22, 2023, the renowned British actor Joss Ackland passed away at his home in Devon, England, at the age of 95

Ackland’s distinguished career, lasting more than 70 years, featured him in a variety of authoritative roles, characterized by his deep, resonant voice.

Ackland was born into a poor family in London on February 29, 1928. The son of an Irish journalist father and an English mother, he discovered his love for acting early in life. He developed his acting skills at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama and began his professional career in 1945, quickly making a name for himself in the UK theater world.

With a filmography spanning over 130 titles, Ackland was best known for his roles in “Lethal Weapon 2” as Arjen Rudd and Hans in “The Mighty Ducks.” His performance in “White Mischief” earned him critical acclaim and a BAFTA nomination.

Ackland’s heart, however, was firmly rooted in the theater. He was a mainstay of the British stage, performing in roles like Falstaff in Shakespeare’s plays and appearing in the original cast of “Evita.”

His career experienced a resurgence in the 1980s with roles in “The Hunt for Red October” and “The Sicilian.” Ackland also ventured into music videos and narrated audiobooks. He later reflected on his career, particularly on his decision to take on smaller roles, driven by his passion for acting.

In “The Mighty Ducks,” Ackland’s role as Hans showcased his ability to motivate and inspire, echoing his off-screen persona.

Even in his 90s, Ackland continued to act, with appearances in “Midsomer Murders” and “Kingdom,” and a stage performance as King Lear in 2013.

Ackland’s personal life was characterized by his marriage to Rosemary Kirkcaldy in 1951. Together, they had seven children. His wife passed away in 2002. Ackland leaves behind five daughters, two sons, 32 grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.
