A tragic car crash in downtown Houston, Texas, on November 11, 2023, claimed the lives of six individuals, including ex-NFL player D.J. Hayden and two of his former teammates from the University of Houston.
The incident occurred around 2 a.m. when a black Chrysler 300, allegedly speeding, disregarded a red light and collided with the football players’ black Acura SUV on Fannin Street. The collision’s force resulted in immediate fatalities and critical injuries to its victims, including five men and a woman. Among the deceased were 33-year-old Hayden, a former cornerback for the Oakland Raiders, and his University of Houston colleagues, Zachary McMillian and Ralph Oragwu. Additionally, 32-year-old Lauren Robinson-Holliday, an alumnus of Hightower High School and East Texas Baptist University, lost her life in the accident.
The driver of the Chrysler, whose identity remains undisclosed, also perished in the accident.
A homeless individual nearby tragically succumbed to injuries related to the crash. Four people died at the scene and two additional victims passed away in the hospital. Jeffery Lewis, another ex-University of Houston football player, sustained life-threatening injuries and is currently receiving medical care, as well as an unidentified woman.
The Houston Police Department is conducting a thorough investigation into the circumstances of the crash. Preliminary findings suggest that the Chrysler was significantly over the speed limit when it ran the red light, causing the fatal collision. The area, a hub of nightlife activity, was notably crowded at the time of the incident.
D.J. Hayden, a prominent athlete, was drafted by the Oakland Raiders in 2013 and had earned acclaim for his sportsmanship. The loss of Hayden and his teammates has resonated profoundly with their fans and fellow athletes.
As the probe into the crash progresses, Houston Police are appealing to the public for any information that might aid their investigation.
