On November 4, 2023, in Carroll County, Maryland, a car crash led to the death of four people, which included a set of grandparents and their grandson.

The accident occurred on Liberty Road at around 5:30 pm. A Chevrolet Equinox, under the control of Charles Black III, 72, was preparing to turn left onto Skidmore Road. Inside the vehicle were his wife, Barbara Black, 69; her sister, Debbie Hill, 63; their grandson, Gage Black, 17; and Phillip Ceresa, 15. The Equinox was rear-ended by a Saturn, driven by Austin Walker, aged 25. The impact propelled the Equinox into the path of an oncoming Ford F-350, driven by Jeffrey Burdette, 59, of Mt. Airy.

Charles Black III, Barbara Black, and Debbie Hill were pronounced dead at the scene. Both Gage Black and Phillip Ceresa were airlifted to a trauma center in Baltimore, where Gage Black later died due to his injuries.

The incident is currently under thorough investigation. Preliminary reports from the authorities suggest that impaired driving did not play a role in the crash.

Following the tragedy, a GoFundMe campaign was established to support the victims’ families with medical and funeral expenses.

Investigators from the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office are working to shed light on the specifics of the crash. Their efforts are focused on providing clarity and closure to the community and the families affected by this tragedy.
