The skeletal remains found in a wooded region of McMinn County, Tennessee, by hunters have been identified as those of David Dewayne Abbott, a Georgia resident. Abbott was reported missing on June 23, 2016, when he was 43 years old. He had a documented history of schizophrenia and other health challenges. The last time anyone saw Abbott was when he left his car, which was parked less than a mile from the location where his remains were later found.
A thorough forensic examination confirmed the identity of the remains. Retired detective Steve Blevins, who led the investigation when Abbott initially disappeared in 2016, verified the findings. Blevins, even after retirement, continued his search for answers in the Abbott case.
The exact circumstances surrounding Abbott’s disappearance and death are not yet known. Initial assessments from the investigators have found no signs of foul play. It’s believed that Abbott may have gone into the woods shortly after leaving his vehicle and subsequently passed away. The reason for his death and the lengthy period his remains went unnoticed, especially being near a road and a business, are still being investigated.
The news has brought both closure and sorrow to Abbott’s family. Abbott’s fiancée and stepdaughter expressed their grief and confusion over how his remains went undetected for years in a location so close to public areas.
The local Sheriff praised retired detective Blevins for his determination in the case. Blevins’ dedication over the years serves as a testament to the commitment many in law enforcement display, even after their official service ends, in seeking answers and closure for families.
