Renowned soul vocalist Jean Knight, famed for her timeless track “Mr. Big Stuff,” has passed away at the age of 80.
Jean Caliste, better known by her stage name Jean Knight, died from natural causes in New Orleans, Louisiana, on November 22, 2023. This was confirmed by a statement from her publicist and validated by her family.
Born in 1943 in New Orleans, Knight’s career took off in the 1970s with her hit single “Mr. Big Stuff,” recorded in Malaco Studios in Jackson, Mississippi. The song soared to number two on the Billboard Hot 100 and topped the Soul Singles chart for five weeks.
Knight’s career started in 1965 with a demo cover of Jackie Wilson’s “Stop Doggin’ Me Around.” Despite local success in New Orleans, she gained nationwide attention in 1970 after being discovered by songwriter Ralph Williams. Her breakthrough led to a Grammy nomination in 1972 and double platinum certification for “Mr. Big Stuff.”
Knight’s music, including hits like “My Toot Toot” and “Do Me,” was released under various labels, including her own, Comstar. Her impact was recognized in 2007 with an induction into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame. Bernie Cyrus, of the Louisiana Music Commission, lauded Knight’s willingness to support charitable causes and her inimitable style, especially in “Mr. Big Stuff.”
