Interstate Collision Leaves 6 Dead, 20 Injured

In a severe accident on the morning of November 14, 2023, Interstate 70 West in Licking County, Ohio, witnessed a catastrophic event involving a charter bus and a semitrailer.

Traveling from the Tuscarawas Valley Local School District in eastern Ohio, the bus, carrying 57 passengers, was struck from behind by a semi-truck. In a chain reaction, two passenger cars, two commercial vehicles, and the bus were affected. The incident tragically claimed at least six lives and caused injuries to 20 others. Three students aged 15-18 were killed, as well as three passengers in a car.

The bus was journeying to a conference held by the Ohio School Boards Association in Columbus, Ohio, when the accident occurred just after 9 a.m. Students and chaperones from the school district were among the passengers. The crash led to substantial destruction and at least three vehicles on fire, which was captured by The Ohio Department of Transportation’s cameras.

Sean Grady, the Director of Licking County Emergency Management Agency, confirmed these fatalities and injuries. Victims were taken to several nearby hospitals, including Grant Medical Center, Mount Carmel East, and Nationwide Children’s Hospital.

Pioneer Trails, a family-run bus company located in Millersburg, Holmes County, owned the severely damaged bus. Emergency teams from both Licking County and eastern Franklin County, Ohio, arrived swiftly to address the emergency and aid those affected.

The Ohio State police are actively investigating the crash’s cause. Following the collision, the highway was shut down in both directions, leading to extensive traffic backups.

In reaction to this serious event, the American Red Cross provided 30 units of blood to a local hospital, highlighting the severity of the accident.
