Another heartbreaking boat tragedy struck Nigeria, leaving 17 dead with more than 70 reported missing after a boat capsized on the Benue River in the Ardo-Kola district of Taraba state.
The accident, which unfolded on the night of October 28, 2023, has added to the grim tally of maritime disasters in the country.
On board were over 100 traders, who were returning from a fish market when the boat met its ill fate. Rescue operations have so far recovered 17 bodies and saved 14 survivors, but 73 people are still missing. The efforts to find them are ongoing, with the strong currents and high waters of the Benue River posing significant hurdles for rescuers, which could prolong the operation for days.
Boat accidents are a recurring problem in Nigeria, with many incidents attributed to the overloading of vessels and inadequate road infrastructure, compelling people to take the riskier river routes.
This recent incident is the third in the last four months involving a boat carrying more than 100 passengers. The pattern suggests that overloading is a major factor in these frequent maritime catastrophes.
In response to this latest incident, Taraba’s Governor Agbu Kefas has referred to it as a “monumental tragedy” and has taken steps to mandate the use of life jackets for boat passengers statewide, a move aimed at increasing passenger safety on waterways.
The local community has shown remarkable involvement in the rescue efforts, working alongside professional rescue agencies. Their knowledge of the river and dedication to helping in the crisis have been instrumental to the search operations.
Authorities have launched an investigation to ascertain the exact cause of the boat capsizing, hoping to find answers that could help prevent such incidents in the future.
