A six-year-old from Georgetown, Texas, died from his injuries on November 14, two months after a brutal attack in his home.
On September 11, 2023, Jeremy Diaz was asleep in his bed when Daniel Logan, 39, a neighbor, forcibly entered the Diaz residence, wielding a baseball bat.
In a violent spree, Logan assaulted Jeremy, causing multiple skull fractures and brain swelling. The attack also left Logan’s mother with serious injuries, including a facial laceration and a knocked-out tooth, after she attempted to intervene.
Following two months of hope for Jeremy’s recovery, his father, Arturo Diaz, recounted finding his son in critical condition on November 13, having suffered a neurostorm – an episode caused by the brain injury – which he described as “six hours of hell on earth.” Despite showing signs of improvement, including plans to remove him from a ventilator, Jeremy’s condition deteriorated rapidly, leading to his death.
Initially, Logan faced charges of causing serious bodily injury to a child and aggravated assault of a family member. Following Jeremy’s death, authorities are considering enhancing the charges to capital murder, pending findings from the Travis County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Logan, who is currently held on a $650,000 bond, has undergone a mental health assessment, and his attorney, Marc Chavez, has called for reserved judgment due to issues related to Logan’s mental health.
The Diaz family described Jeremy as a “bright, vibrant child” who loved activities like jiujitsu, soccer, and playing the piano. Arturo Diaz shared the depth of his loss, stating, “I was there when he took his first breath and saw him take his last – no parent should see their children buried before them.” The family is planning a memorial service for Jeremy at a local church.
