Teen Hero Dies Defending Friend

A 17-year-old boy was fatally injured following an attack by a group of about 15 students outside Rancho High School in Las Vegas, Nevada, 

Jonathan Lewis, an aspiring artist and a student at Rancho High School, died in the hospital less than two weeks after the brutal assault.

On the afternoon of November 1, 2023, Lewis reportedly stood up for a smaller friend who had been bullied and robbed by the group. 

According to eyewitness accounts and video footage, Lewis confronted the attackers, leading to a violent altercation. In the disturbing footage, Lewis is seen throwing a punch at one of his assailants before being swarmed and repeatedly struck, including kicks and hits to the head while on the ground. Another friend of Lewis’ who tried to help him was also surrounded and attacked.

Found bleeding profusely from the head, Lewis was rushed to the hospital. Despite intensive medical efforts, he died from his injuries. His father, deeply affected by the loss, expressed his grief and disappointment over the senseless violence. He hoped that this tragedy would raise awareness about the pressing issue of youth violence.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Unit is actively investigating the case. Several students involved in the incident may face charges.

Jonathan Lewis is remembered by his family and friends as a kind, loving, and caring young man with a bright future.
