In Roy, Utah, a local 36-year-old male has been indicted on multiple serious charges, including first-degree homicide, intensified child maltreatment, and dual allegations of severe sexual abuse of a minor.

These charges come in the wake of an incident that led to the death of a toddler and left his twin sister grievously harmed.

Court records indicate that Jonathan Allen Dunn, previously convicted of child abuse in 2017, was babysitting the twins when he began physically assaulting them on Wednesday night, December 20.

According to the affidavit of probable cause, Dunn admitted to hitting the children “harder than he should have,” along with pinching them, throwing them onto the bed several times, and pushing them into a door frame. He also allegedly administered children’s Tylenol and sleep medicines to the siblings.

The affidavit further claims Dunn admitted to pinching the genitalia of both children and striking them in the head with a hard foam mallet and the butt of a Nerf gun.

Dunn called 911 on the morning of Thursday, December 21, 2023,  after he discovered the boy not breathing, and the girl severely injured.

Upon arrival, police found the boy, identified as Aleister Kunzler, unresponsive on the porch, while the girl was found sitting on the couch with visible bruises on her face. Aleister was pronounced dead, and his sister was hospitalized with a brain bleed.

The community has rallied in support of the family, with a GoFundMe campaign organized by Shaylee Lindsey to cover funeral expenses, medical bills, and support for Aleister’s sisters as they cope with this loss. The fundraiser has collected nearly $10,000.

Jonathan Allen Dunn, now facing the possibility of the death penalty, was previously incarcerated for breaking a child’s arm in 2016. He served two years in prison and was released in April 2019. He had been on parole until December 2021, as confirmed by the Utah Department of Corrections.
