James McCaffrey, widely recognized for his voice role as Max Payne in the popular video game series and his appearances in the TV series “Rescue Me,” died at the age of 65.
His death was confirmed by his wife, actress Rochelle Boström, and multiple sources reported that he succumbed to multiple myeloma, a type of cancer affecting bone marrow and white blood cells. McCaffrey died surrounded by his family and friends at his home in Larchmont, New York on Sunday, December 17.
Kevin Dillon, a fellow actor and friend, paid tribute to McCaffrey on social media, expressing his sorrow and admiration for McCaffrey. Denis Leary, who worked with McCaffrey on “Rescue Me,” also shared his condolences online.
McCaffrey’s career in entertainment spanned over 35 years, during which he became a familiar face on television. He had notable roles in series such as “New York Undercover,” “Viper,” “Sex and the City,” “Suits,” “Blue Bloods,” “As the World Turns,” and “Jessica Jones.” However, his most memorable role was as Jimmy Keefe in “Rescue Me,” a New York firefighter who died on 9/11 and appeared as a ghost to his cousin, firefighter Tommy Gavin, played by Denis Leary. McCaffrey’s portrayal of Jimmy Keefe was not only haunting but also served as a conscience and emotional touchstone throughout the show’s seven seasons.
In the world of video games, McCaffrey left a lasting impact with his voice role as Max Payne, the avenging former NYPD officer turned DEA agent. He voiced this character in several installments of the video game series, released in 2001, 2003, 2008, and 2012.
McCaffrey is survived by his wife, Rochelle Boström, and their daughter, Tiernan.
