His death was confirmed by his sister, Betsy Rivers, on Facebook, where she expressed that Bobby is now free from pain. She told Fox News Digital, “His cancer had spread to his lungs, and he suffered a few mini strokes, according to the MRI.”
Born in 1953 in Southern California, Rivers made history as Milwaukee’s first Black television film critic in 1979. A graduate of Marquette University, he launched his career in broadcasting in the 1970s at Milwaukee’s WQFM station. His groundbreaking role as a film critic on television earned him widespread recognition and respect.
Rivers’ career was marked by numerous achievements and firsts. He was one of the first African American contestants and youngest winners on the syndicated game show “The Movie Game” in the 1970s. In the 1980s, he moved to New York City, where he worked as an entertainment reporter for WPIX-TV before joining VH1 in 1987 as a VJ. On VH1, he hosted his celebrity interview show, “Watch Bobby Rivers,” where he conversed with notable personalities like Paul McCartney, Meryl Streep, and Mel Gibson.
In addition to his work on VH1, Rivers made significant contributions to the Food Network, hosting the short-lived series “Top 5” in the early 2000s. His career also spanned acting, with appearances in popular TV shows such as “The Equalizer” and “The Sopranos.”
Despite his success, Rivers faced challenges, including racist and homophobic attacks, as he disclosed in a July 2023 interview with Our Lives Wisconsin. He recounted receiving hate mail, some marked with swastikas, and hateful voicemails, shedding light on the darker aspects of fame.
