A fatal shooting at Paddock Mall in Ocala, Florida on December 23, 2023, has left one man dead and another person injured. The incident, which occurred around 3:40 p.m., led to a widespread law enforcement response.
At the scene, 40-year-old David Nathaniel Barron was discovered dead with multiple gunshot injuries. A female victim was also hospitalized with a gunshot wound to her leg, classified as non-life-threatening. Additionally, the event resulted in one individual suffering chest pain and another with a broken arm.
Chief Mike Balken of the Ocala Police Department immediately mobilized a response to the shooting reports. The shooting, taking place in the mall’s general area, appears to have been a deliberate act of violence targeting Barron.
Authorities are searching for Albert J. Shell Jr., 39, on charges including premeditated first-degree murder and attempted premeditated first-degree murder. Shell, last seen wearing a black mask and dark clothing, is still at large. A firearm, likely used in the shooting, was found at the scene. The Ocala police are offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to Shell’s arrest.
Following the shooting, Paddock Mall, which includes retailers like J.C. Penney and Foot Locker, was promptly evacuated and shut down. The mall’s owner, Washington Prime Group (WPG), has not yet commented on security measures post-incident.
Accounts from shoppers, notably Calvin and Diana Amos, depict a scene of chaos and fear. The shooting has heightened concerns about the security of shared spaces, particularly during peak seasons like the holidays.
