Ralph Cirella, celebrated in the entertainment sector and recognized as the longtime stylist for radio personality Howard Stern, passed away at 58 on December 5, 2023. His death occurred during a medical procedure while he was receiving treatment for a rare type of lymphoma.
Cirella was born on April 20, 1965, and began his association with Howard Stern in 1985 through a phone call into Stern’s radio program. He emerged as an integral component of “The Howard Stern Show,” serving as Stern’s stylist, as well as advising on wardrobe and set design. His role was crucial in connecting Stern with Beth Ostrosky, who would later become Stern’s spouse.
Howard Stern, on his SiriusXM radio show, announced Cirella’s death, highlighting their deep and enduring friendship of more than 40 years. Stern expressed profound grief, focusing on Cirella’s reluctance to seek early treatment for his illness, which Stern deemed curable.
Beyond his work with Stern, Cirella had a varied career in entertainment, including roles as a makeup artist and costume designer. His creative contributions notably shaped the aesthetic of Stern’s shows between 1989 and 2007. Actor John Stamos also commemorated Cirella, reflecting on their friendship that started in the 1990s.
Cirella’s initial call to Stern’s show was a career-defining moment and the start of a deep friendship with Stern. His request for a Connie Francis Christmas song for his mother marked the beginning of what would evolve into a significant professional and personal bond. Cirella was known for his humor and unique connection with Stern, developing a “secret language” that demonstrated their close relationship.
Cirella’s health issues, however, became increasingly concerning. Stern, in his tribute, noted that Cirella had delayed addressing his illness, which led to serious complications. The illness, a rare lymphoma variant, was characterized as treatable, indicating that earlier intervention might have influenced the outcome.
Friends and colleagues, including Stern and Stamos, are sharing their grief and reminiscing about Cirella. He is remembered as a distinctive and irreplaceable figure, leaving a notable absence in a community and a show where he was a key figure for decades.
