On Christmas Day a 23-year-old Michigan father of three was arrested following the shooting of his ex-girlfriend’s new boyfriend.
The altercation occurred shortly after Deandre Patrick Lawrence had delivered Christmas gifts to his three children at his ex-girlfriend’s home.
According to the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office, the incident began as Lawrence arrived at the house to present gifts to his three children. The situation quickly escalated into a violent confrontation with the new boyfriend, who also lived at the home. During the dispute, the victim attempted to flee the scene but tripped and fell. It was at this time, authorities alleged, that Lawrence shot him twice in the back.
The victim, whose age was not specified in the reports, survived the attack but was left in critical condition. Following the incident, Lawrence was apprehended and faces serious charges, including assault with intent to murder and felony firearm possession.
Lawrence, who has previous felony convictions for fleeing and eluding, and home invasion out of Wayne and Macomb County, entered a not-guilty plea during his arraignment. The court set his bond at $1 million, with strict conditions that, if released, he must have no contact with the victim or witnesses and be equipped with a GPS tether.
Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido expressed his views on the incident, stating, “Violent actions have no place in resolving disputes. Our thoughts are with the victim and his family. We will work to ensure accountability for this terrible Christmas Day shooting.”
Lawrence is scheduled for a probable cause conference on January 4, 2024, with a preliminary examination set for January 11. The case has drawn attention to the issue of domestic violence and its impact on families, particularly during what are supposed to be festive and peaceful times.
