In Northwest Washington, D.C., an 85-year-old man is accused of fatally stabbing his 81-year-old wife in the back following an argument over pancakes, officials announced on Friday, December 15, 2023.

The man, identified as Steven Schwartz, had a recent hospitalization and significant weight loss prior to the incident involving his wife, Sharron Hilda Schwartz.

The altercation, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for D.C., took place in their apartment near Corcoran Street and 13th Street. Steven Schwartz reportedly refused to eat the pancakes prepared by his wife, leading to a heated argument. Mrs. Schwartz, concerned for her husband’s health, insisted on him eating to regain his strength.

Police responded to the scene after a 911 call around 3:40 p.m. on Sunday, December 10, 2023. Upon arrival, they found Mrs. Schwartz with a fatal stab wound by the front door and her husband with self-inflicted injuries upstairs. They were both rushed to the hospital, where Mrs. Schwartz was pronounced dead.

The stepson of Steven Schwartz, who alerted the authorities after neighbors noticed a disturbance, found his stepfather beside his wife, initially believing she had fallen. Schwartz then admitted to stabbing both himself and his wife.

During questioning by the police, Steven Schwartz appeared confused and distressed, showing disbelief and remorse. He mentioned suffering from mental health issues, including “eating diversion” and depression, and had recently had a stroke, impacting his mental and physical health.

Schwartz admitted the dispute began over pancakes and escalated when a plate was thrown. He then grabbed a carving knife and attacked his wife. Despite his injuries, his condition was not life-threatening. He was subsequently arrested and charged with second-degree murder while armed.

After 40 years of marriage, Steven Schwartz pleaded not guilty to the charges. He is being held without bond, with a preliminary hearing set for January 2, 2024.
