Parking Dispute in Phoenix Leads to Fatal Shooting

A dispute over a parking spot escalated into a fatal incident on December 14, 2023, in Phoenix, Arizona. Edith Rivas, aged 26, tragically lost her life in the incident.

The episode unfolded around 9 p.m. on East Mohave Street, in proximity to Sky Harbor Airport.

Phoenix police, responding to a shooting report, found Rivas with a gunshot injury. Despite being rushed to a hospital, she succumbed to her wounds.

Gary Parohinog, 34, was apprehended and faces first-degree murder charges.

The conflict began when Parohinog confronted Rivas over how she parked her car, blocking his exit in their apartment complex’s driveway.

According to reports, Parohinog brandished a handgun and shot Rivas in the shoulder during a scuffle to disarm him.

He then attempted a second shot with another firearm, which malfunctioned. Parohinog exited the scene, as Rivas ran into her apartment and instructed her roommate to dial 911 and secure the door.

However, Parohinog returned, kicking in the door, and destroying the roommate’s phone as she attempted to contact the police He proceeded to Rivas’ room to shoot her again, this time fatally in the chest. Rivas’ children were nearby during the shooting.

Parohinog fled the scene, hitting several vehicles. He was caught soon after and reportedly confessed to the shooting, citing animosity towards Rivas.

Parohinog’s criminal record includes a five-year sentence for armed robbery, aggravated assault, and firearm discharge within city limits. He was not permitted to have a gun and was released from prison in February 2023.
