Prince Constantin of Liechtenstein Passes Away at 51

Prince Constantin of Liechtenstein, a businessman and a member of the Princely House of Liechtenstein, died unexpectedly on December 5, 2023, at the age of 51. The Princely House of Liechtenstein announced his passing, causing a wave of mourning throughout the nation and among the royal family members.

Prince Constantin was born on March 15, 1972, in St. Gallen, Switzerland. He was the youngest son of Prince Hans-Adam II, the reigning prince of Liechtenstein, and Countess Marie Kinsky. His upbringing was deeply entwined with the history and governance of Liechtenstein, a small German-speaking principality located between Switzerland and Austria.

After completing his education at Liechtenstein High School, he furthered his studies by earning a master’s degree in law from the University of Salzburg. His career was notable for significant contributions to his family’s business interests, particularly during his 11-year tenure as the general director and chairman of the board of the Prince Liechtenstein Foundation, which manages the royal family’s assets.

The prince played a pivotal role in the diversification of the Liechtenstein Group, an international investment and holding company based in Vaduz, Liechtenstein. Under his leadership, the company expanded into agriculture, forestry, renewable energy, and real estate, marking a period of growth and success.

In 1999, Prince Constantin married Countess Marie Kálnoky de Kőröspatak, with whom he had three children: Prince Benedikt, Princess Georgina, and Prince Moritz. He was recognized for his dedication to his family and his involvement in charitable endeavors, such as funding the reconstruction of a kindergarten playground in the Czech Republic that was destroyed by a tornado.

Despite his royal status and business success, Constantin maintained a low profile, often avoiding the public spotlight. His sudden demise has been a shock to those who knew him both personally and professionally. The Liechtenstein Group expressed profound sorrow over his death and extended condolences to his widow, Princess Marie, and their children.

Liechtenstein operates under a constitutional hereditary monarchy, currently headed by Prince Hans-Adam II. Prince Constantin’s elder brother, Hereditary Prince Alois, is next in line for the throne. The principality, comparable in size to Washington, D.C., and home to around 40,000 people, features a unique political structure that combines the authority of the reigning prince with a democratically elected parliament, ensuring a balanced governance system.
