On January 18, 2024, a school outing at Harni Lake in Vadodara, a major city in Gujarat, India, met with a grim end as a boat ferrying the school group took a fatal turn, resulting in the death of 12 students and two educators.
According to fire service authorities, the boat, involved in a private school trip, tipped over in the lake. Despite rescuing at least 11 students, the accident led to a loss of lives.
Vadodara fire officer Jitu Parmar confirmed that the search for a missing individual was still in progress, and the root cause of the accident was being investigated.
Gujarat’s Chief Minister, Bhupendra Patel, expressed profound dismay over the incident, labeling it as “extremely distressing.” The event has deeply impacted the local community and beyond.
This accident underscores a persistent problem in India: inadequate safety precautions on numerous vessels.
Reports from the Hindustan Times indicate that the boat was significantly overloaded, carrying more than 31 passengers despite a maximum capacity of 14. In response to safety violations, several individuals from the boating facility and project managers who developed the lake destination were arrested.
According to a teacher, only seven or eight students were provided with life jackets, a lapse that has been a factor in previous accidents, like in May of the previous year when a double-decker boat carrying over 30 passengers capsized in Kerala state, resulting in 22 deaths.
In a similar event in May 2018, 30 individuals lost their lives when their boat capsized on the surging Godavari River in Andhra Pradesh.
Overloading and the lack of life jackets are under investigation as the primary reasons for the accident. Legal proceedings have begun against the boat operators, the Kotiya Project, on charges of culpable homicide.
In response to the tragic event, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have announced monetary compensation for the families of the deceased. An investigation has been ordered to probe the role of school authorities and boat operators in the accident.
