In Fort Worth, Texas, what began as a routine firewood delivery ended in tragedy.
Scotty Jackson, a 51-year-old delivery man, was brutally attacked and killed by a naked 27-year-old assailant identified as Chrisantus Omondi on Saturday, January 13, according to a police affidavit.
Jackson, known for his hardworking and outgoing nature, was delivering firewood in preparation for an anticipated cold wave before he was found dead in the front yard of a home after suffering severe trauma to the neck and head.
His daughter, Kasey Deleon, described him as someone who always ensured that others had enough firewood, emphasizing his caring nature and dedication to providing for the community. This final delivery, intended to ensure warmth for another household, turned fatal.
As Jackson and the homeowner, who was helping with the unloading, worked, they were confronted by Omondi, an Airbnb renter. Claiming ownership of the property and brandishing a key, Omondi demanded they leave. Despite Jackson’s reassurance of their right to be there and explaining the homeowner’s ownership, Omondi’s aggression escalated. He attacked Jackson with a firewood log, causing critical head injuries. The homeowner, who was also attacked, managed to escape and call for help.
The police arrived to find Jackson critically injured. Efforts to save him were unsuccessful, and he succumbed to his injuries. Meanwhile, Omondi had returned to his rented Airbnb, where he confronted and threatened another tenant. When the police arrived at the Airbnb, they found Omondi uncooperative and aggressive. He was subdued with a taser and taken into custody.
Omondi now faces charges of murder, aggravated assault against a security officer, and obstruction of justice, with a bond set at over $300,000.
This was not the first time Omondi came into contact with law enforcement. Last year, in Tarrant County, he held a security guard at gunpoint. He also has a history of evading arrest.
Jackson’s family, grappling with grief and disbelief, seeks justice and a meaningful sendoff for a father who, in their words, “deserved so much better.”
